Descriptive Memory:
The work presented reflects a strong presence of confusion and the constant search for harmony between my body and mind. This inconstancy of new cycles, new treatments in the hope that I will return to balance. The colours that make it up have somehow been chosen through feeling, perhaps unconsciously associating them with organs that are currently more debilitated; the organic forms convey a certain comfort to me, as if they were welcoming me.

Descriptive Memory:
The painting “Colours of Resilience” represents the journey of individuals facing the complexity and challenges of lupus. The composition is rich in symbolism, highlighting the strength and resilience of those who experience this condition.
In the center of the painting, a central figure personifies the fight against lupus. This character is painted in a vibrant colour palette, with vivid, contrasting tones to reflect the diversity of lived experiences, representing the different emotions and experiences associated with the disease. The facial expression is a mixture of determination and vulnerability, conveying the duality of life with lupus. The cheeks of the central figure are highlighted with a subtle pink tone, symbolizing the characteristic mark of lupus.
Around the central figure, other characters represent social, medical and emotional support. A focused doctor, symbolizing the team of health professionals who must be present to offer care. Friends and family are represented by figures emanating warmth and solidarity, representing the crucial support system in less positive moments. Varied facial expressions portray the emotional complexity of the journey, from moments of joy to deeper challenges and reflections.
The background of the painting is a mixture of shapes representing the immune system, some tumultuous areas with more blurred points and others more serene and with more balanced points. This representation symbolizes the fluctuations of health and the complexities of the interactions between the body and illness.
“Colours of Resilience” seeks not only to portray the reality of lupus, but also to convey a message of hope, resilience and community. The diversity of colours and expressions reflects the richness of human experiences, while the pink branding highlights the uniqueness of the journey faced by those living with lupus.

This painting aims to highlight on the one hand how the emotional state can influence Lupus, and on the other hand how Lupus can affect mental health.
In the first aspect, the emotional state has been increasingly recognised as an important factor in the manifestation and progression of Lupus, such as stress, anxiety and depression.
On the other hand, it aims to highlight how living with Lupus can affect mental health, with emotional self-care, contact with support organisations, associations and institutions, and professional psychological support services being important.
These two aspects are sides of the same coin for living with Lupus in balance and peace.

Descriptive Memory:
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that is still relatively unknown, which causes great uncertainty regarding the future. As it is a chronic disease that goes through periods of flare-ups and remissions, it has a major impact on the patients emotions and mental health.
The aim of this work is to raise awareness of the emotional difficulties that Lupus entails, as these tend to be devalued compared to the physical complications of the disease. Present throughout the different phases of Lupus, emotions evolve, often alternating. By asking yourself how you are dealing with them at different times, you will be able to better understand your feelings. Here some strong emotions were highlighted to attract your attention. For a better interpretation of the work, I invite you to do a little exercise: Highlight some emotions, match different colors and paint. Observe the emotions of the moment and define what colors you want to paint the future with. Only you can paint your destiny.

Women and the Lupus disease.
Strong women with strong roots who symbolize stability, associated with the growth of the disease, life, and renewal as butterflies are free, the soul of a woman with Lupus is also free, like butterflies in constant metamorphosis. They yearn for freedom, beauty and love. Passion, air in the soul and feet on the ground. soul and feet on the ground, feet as strong as the roots of trees, which the branches of life and the butterflies with their little red fragments symbolize the round reddish spots in discoid shapes round spots in discoid shapes, small circles, at the beginning of the disease and its evolution, the lupus woman’s skirt is surrounded by space. A strong woman with the grace of a butterfly and voracious like the purple ribbon, symbolizing awareness of the disease Lupus, like freedom and life… long live all the strong and warrior women with lupus.

The work “Lupita and me” represents the relationship with the disease, the way I’ve learnt to live with it on my journey, as if it were my pet or, sometimes, I hers. In “Hangover hex”, that’s how I’ve often felt over the last two years, strangely enough I feel like I have all the symptoms of a hangover, but without the alcohol and drugs. At least illegal ones, and I wonder: is it the medication, am I drinking enough water, what have I done wrong? It feels like a curse. My body and my head are a bottle crushed under pressure.

Following on from the creative work developed in 2023 on Lupus, I now present two works that express what I imagine to be the life experience of someone suffering from the disease Lupus (Erythematosus).  The expression of one of the works explores the acute phase of the disease, the confusion of the tortuous clinical state, identifying pain and sorrow as difficult obstacles to achieving full well-being “pain, sorrow…”, the other work reflects hope, regaining control of the disease, facing it head on “eyes completely open”

Teresa Sil’s intimate works show the different intense and contrasting phases of the outbreaks caused by LUPUS.

The work features three portraits overlaid with glazes, as well as some hands and a series of interventions with cut-outs and threads. One of these portraits is the most striking and looks at the viewer as it fades away. The threads support a large part of the painting, going round the heart of one of the portraits.
The work is illuminated from behind by LEDs and is designed to be seen against the light, in order to appreciate both the transparencies and the cut-outs.
It is a fragmented representation of the disease Lupus, framed by lights, shadows and transparencies that allow us to appreciate the first layers of the pictorial process.

Devising and thinking about this artistic project was to immerse myself in the complexity of life with Lupus. This autoimmune disease that affects millions of people around the world is felt and viewed with some prejudice and ignorance by those who don’t suffer from it. Through these paintings I explore a heart that feels like it is launching and blood flow with (im)perfection, seeking to convey the nuances and challenges of the experience of living with lupus.
The painting Metamorphosis of Hope aims to represent the duality of the condition, showing a struggle hidden in a face that seems to smile and a gaze that seems to cry. The continuous search for happiness even in the face of difficulties, and the continuous transformation of butterflies, the hope and beauty that can emerge in this adverse environment. Masks of a Hidden Harmony is a painting that touches on the need often felt by patients to hide part of their pain and struggle, maintaining a façade of normality only betrayed by a suffering gaze that seeks understanding and empathy. These works aim to portray lupus from different perspectives seeking to make the community aware of the disease and its impacts, but also to celebrate the ability of those who live with it to overcome. Each brushstroke, each detail are emotions and feelings that invite the viewer to reflect on this complex human condition.

About the artwork: I have lost track of the number of times people say and tell me that I can’t be ill and don’t believe me as from the outside I look so well and I hide it. The gold foil represents the exterior that people see with the abstract acrylic paint representing what is going on underneath the surface inside my body, a beautiful chaos of pain, inflammation, and brain fog amongst other things.

The drawing depicts a face torn apart by a hand whose nails tear the skin of the face, leaving deep scars. It is intended to represent the suffering of those who suffer from Lupus, and the isolation to which they often either self-submit or are subjected by others. Although there are outward signs of the disease (the well-known butterfly-shaped “rosacea”), which appear on the skin of some patients, in most cases Lupus is a “silent” disease that only those who suffer from it are aware of. This is why the title of the book is “Lúpus Patiar Silentio”, a Latin phrase meaning “Lupus, I will suffer in silence”, portraying the solitary suffering of those affected by the disease.
